The vote was close since Election Day, but in the end, Esther Sanchez clung to an eventual lead that gained her another term as Oceanside’s mayor, according to final results Dec. 3 from the San Diego County Registrar of Voters.
At one point by mid-November, Sanchez had moved ahead of Deputy Mayor Ryan Keim by 31 votes. Ultimately, Sanchez’s lead grew to 232 votes, or 50.15% (39,100 votes) to 48.85% (38,868), according to the election results. It turned out to be among the closest elections in the county this season.
In the race for city treasurer, challenger Phyllis Dominguez won the seat by 994 votes over incumbent Victor Roy:
✔ Phyllis Dominguez: 24,843 votes, 35.32%
✔ Victor Roy: 23,849 votes, 33.90%
✔ Jack Fernandes: 21,654 votes, 30.78%
Oceanside residents handily approved an extension of Measure X, a sale tax originally approved in 2019, by an additional 10 years. The measure won 69.67% to 30.33%, or 55,360 votes to 24,104 votes.
In the District 3 council race, currently held by Keim, Jimmy Figueroa held his lead to win the seat:
✔ Jimmy Figueroa: 10,250 votes, 47.53%
✔ Laura Bassett: 8,804 votes, 40.82%
✔ Tom DeMooy: 1,679 votes, 7.79%
✔ Austin Sorenson: 833 votes, 3.86%
District 4 incumbent Councilman Peter Weiss won reelection:
✔ Peter Weiss: 8,995 votes, 45.15%
✔ Amber Kae Niuatoa: 5,810 votes, 29.16%
✔ Omar Hashimi: 5,119 votes, 25.69%
City Clerk Zeb Navarro ran unopposed and won reelection with 62,004 votes, according to the returns.
Oceanside voter turnout by precinct ran between more than 60% to about 90%, according to a Registrar of Voters map. Countywide, voter turnout was 75.8%, with the vast majority of ballots cast by mail, the registrar reported. Out of 1,983,767 registered voters, 1,503,018 ballots were counted. Mail-in ballots numbered 1,275,304. In-person ballots numbered 227,714.
