Oceanside could possibly have a new mayor if current results from unofficial Election Night returns Nov. 5 continue their current trend, although the race is extremely tight.
District 3 Councilman and Deputy Mayor Ryan Keim was slightly ahead of incumbent Mayor Esther Sanchez, 50.69% to 49.31%, or 26,765 votes to 26,036 votes, according to the San Diego County Registrar of Voters.
In the District 3 council race, Jimmy Figueroa and Laura Bassett were the top vote-getters as of Tuesday night:
✔ Jimmy Figueroa: 6,993 votes, 46.24%
✔ Laura Bassett: 6,370 votes, 42.12%
✔ Tom DeMooy: 1,156 votes, 7.64%
✔ Austin Sorenson: 604 votes, 3.99%
In District 4, incumbent Councilman Peter Weiss has a sizeable lead in his race for reelection:
✔ Peter Weiss: 6,501 votes, 47.69%
✔ Amber Kae Niuatoa: 3,753 votes, 27.53%
✔ Omar Hashimi: 3,377 votes, 24.77%
Oceanside residents also voted on whether to extend Measure X, a sale tax originally approved in 2019, by an additional 10 years. The City Council approved its placement on this month’s ballot in June. As of the close of Election Night, the measure was earning strong approval 69.18% to 30.82%, or 37,199 votes to 16,569 votes.
The race for city treasurer was essentially tied incumbent Victor Roy and Phyllis Dominguez:
✔ Victor Roy: 16,714 votes, 34.81%
✔ Phyllis Dominguez: 16,588 votes, 34.55%
✔ Jack Fernandes: 14,713 votes, 30.64%
City Clerk Zeb Navarro ran unopposed and will win reelection, according to the unofficial returns.
The next updates of election results are expected by 6 p.m. between Nov. 7-9, according to the registrar.
