The Oceanside Police Department is boosting patrols and safety programs in 2024 thanks to a California Office of Traffic Safety grant.
With the $310,000 grant, made through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the department aims to increase safety on the roads and stem unsafe behaviors, according to an Oceanside Police Department news release. The ultimate goal is to reduce serious injuries and deaths on city roads.
“This grant funding allows us to support our ongoing traffic safety efforts in the community,” police Sgt. Clint Bussey said in the news release. “Our intent is to stop the most unlawful and dangerous behaviors that put people at risk and create an environment where everyone feels safe traveling.”
The grant runs through September and will pay for enforcement measures such as:
✔ DUI checkpoints and patrols.
✔ Operations to stem distracted driving related to the state’s hands-free cell phone law.
✔ Efforts to increase bicycle and pedestrian safety by addressing poor driver behaviors.
✔ Motorcycle safety enforcement.
✔ Collaborations with neighboring agencies.
✔ Enforcement operations focusing on street racing and sideshow activities.
