The Great American Rivalry Series, showcasing premier high school football rivalries across the United States, enters its 21st season as the Cathedral Catholic Dons and St. Augustine Saints face off Friday, Oct. 4, in this year’s installment of the Holy Bowl.
The game will be held at the San Diego Mesa College stadium. Anticipation is high with an expected attendance of 7,000 fans.
Since its inception in 2004, the Great American Rivalry Series has covered more than 1,186 classic rivalry games spanning 46 states, honoring exceptional athletes and decades of competition. In the 2024 National Football League draft alone, 30 athletes who played in the Great American Rivalry Series continued to the NFL.
St. Augustine vs. Cathedral Catholic showcases one of the nation’s top rivalries. The two teams have clashed for 60 years. Last season’s encounter saw St. Augustine take down Cathedral Catholic, 27-21.
The annual rivalry dates back to 1966, originally known as the Charity Bowl before being renamed the Holy Bowl in 1974 due to increased attendance and profitability. This year marks their 60th matchup, with Cathedral Catholic leading the series 37-22 historically.
This year’s presenting partner for the Great American Rivalry Series is the United States Marine Corps, highlighting its commitment to supporting young athletes.
