Smoke from a significant fire at the Oceanside Pier could be seen throughout North San Diego County as crews worked to extinguish the blaze during the late afternoon Thursday, April 25.
A 6 p.m. update from Oceanside city officials stated that the fire was contained and that crews would remain on site through the night. The fire broke out at about 3 p.m. at the end of the pier where the empty Ruby’s Diner space is located. The restaurant spaces, as well as the pier structure itself, are damaged. The cause of the fire was not yet known.
No injuries were reported, according to the city, and personnel from the Brine Box and Bait Shop were accounted for.
Smoke billowed from the restaurant spaces and the underside of the pier structure after the fire broke out. The smoke could be seen from as far east as Escondido and San Marcos south to Encinitas and Solana Beach.
Oceanside Fire Department crews were working with units from CalFire, which provided helicopters, and the Coast Guard to stop the blaze.
“We thank our first reponders and mutual aid partners for their help today,” Oceanside city officials posted in an earlier update. “First (responders) arrived five minutes after the call.”
Junior Seau Beach Community Center programs were cancelled Thursday night due to smoke and crews in the area, city officials stated. Residents and visitors were advised to stay away from the vicinity until further notice.
