San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore will not seek re-election in 2022, he announced Thursday afternoon.

“It is an honor and a privilege to serve the people of San Diego County,” he said in the July 29 announcement. “I am grateful and humbled by the continued community support that I have received for the last 12 years.”

Gore was an undersheriff when he was chosen in 2009 to replace Sheriff Bill Kolender, who retired.

He ran for the position in 2010 and won the election, and he has been re-elected each term since. His current term will end in January 2023.

“Being your Sheriff is one of the most rewarding experiences of my law enforcement career,” he said. “Rewarding primarily because of the extraordinary men and women in the department who work tirelessly every day to keep San Diego the safest urban county in the nation.”

Gore served 32 years with the FBI, becoming an assistant director, before joining the Sheriff’s Department in 2004.

The Sheriff’s Department service area includes the cities of Encinitas, Solana Beach, Del Mar and San Marcos, and it has a station in Encinitas.
