Oceanside CA— On Saturday, June 12, 2021, the Oceanside Fire Department along with the Oceanside Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10577 and Oceanside American Legion Post 146 hosted a United States Flag Retirement Ceremony retiring hundreds of flags according to U.S. Code. The Code states that our country’s flag is retired by fully consuming it in fire until only ashes remain. That was accomplished in a device designed and built by Oceanside firefighters expressly for that purpose.

“We can find many things to divide us. Our religious beliefs, our politics, our choice of athletic teams and recently, to mask or not to mask. Today, we unify at this solemn event for the purpose of retiring those flags that have faithfully served and are now due their honorable and dignified retirement. Thank you Old Glory for always being there for us. We honor you and relieve you of your duty which you have fulfilled so well, ” said Oceanside Fire Chief, Richard Robinson to the gathering attending the ceremony at the Oceanside Fire Department Training Center on Jones Rd.
In attendance were members of the Camp Pendleton, North County and Carlsbad Fire Departments, REACH Air Ambulance, Camp Pendleton Marines and Eagle Young Marines, along with many local organizations including the Knights of Columbus, Veterans Association of North County, Oceanside Elks, Rotary on Lions clubs.
