City of Oceanside and Waste Management to host a Food Scraps Recycling Webinar for Oceanside Businesses

Oceanside CA— The City of Oceanside, in partnership with Waste Management, launched its Food Scraps Recycling Program in early 2020 to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, meet state mandated recycling requirements, assist the City in meeting its zero waste goals, and provide customers with excellent services and opportunities for cost savings through recycling. Since services began in August of 2020, more than 2,600 cubic yards of organics have been diverted from the landfill and over 1,500 cubic yards of food scraps have been processed into renewable energy. By diverting food scraps from the landfill, these efforts are equivalent to taking 940 cars off the road every month, and counting! Over 1,000 businesses have received food scraps recycling services, and over 73% saw overall cost savings by right-sizing their services through recycling.
At the beginning of 2021, the City and Waste Management will begin hosting a series of webinars to provide continuous engagement and support to businesses while they adjust to recycling food scraps.
On Monday January 25, from 12:00 to 12:30 p.m., all Oceanside businesses and their employees are invited to tune in virtually to “Back to the Basics: Food Scraps Recycling 101,” a webinar dedicated to the fundamentals of a successful food scraps recycling program. This short webinar will give a refresher of what goes into each bin, ways to avoid contamination, examples of common contaminants, and opportunities to find overall cost savings through right-sizing and downsizing of services. Participants will also have an opportunity to ask questions during the Q&A session.
Aside from the topics covered during the webinar, the City of Oceanside also wants to remind businesses of the resources available to help. “We want to help all businesses have a successful recycling program, whether your waste is mostly potato peels or office paper,” explains Colleen Foster, the City’s Environmental Officer. “The City and Waste Management
have developed a plethora of training resources on our websites, and offer recycling starter kits and technical assistance trainings, virtually or in person, to best meet the needs of each Oceanside business on their journey to zero waste.”
