Oceanside CA— Just before noon today, July 8, 2020, units from the Oceanside Fire Department responded to the shopping center at 3776 Mission Ave and found a minivan had accidentally crashed into the gas line leading to a building in the parking lot.
The driver was able to remove herself from the vehicle and was treated and transported with minor injuries to Tri-City Medical Center. The vehicle ruptured the natural gas line and resulted in a “broken and blowing” gas line from the parking lot to the building.
Firefighters and Oceanside Police Officers evacuated the area, including a Verizon store nearby. The building with the broken gas line was already vacant.
Firefighters were able to secure the vehicle but were unable to move it off the gas line. They were unable to turn off the gas because the break in the line was before the shut off valve.
SDG&E arrived roughly 30 minutes after the incident and were able to secure the gas line without further incident. No firefighters were injured and one “elderly” woman was transported by fire paramedics.
