Oceanside CA— Oceanside High School, celebrating 113 years in Oceanside, will hold its annual Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on Homecoming Weekend, the third weekend of October. The 14th Annual 2019 Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will be held on Saturday, October 19 at 10am.
The new class of inductees has had numerous, remarkable accomplishments in their designated fields, not only locally, but nationally as well.

Academics

Dr. Chandra Osborn – Class of 1997

Dr. Chandra Osborn is an international expert in health communication and behavior change. For 20 years, she’s designed and evaluated health-enhancing and energy saving products, and turned results into better products, happier customers, cost savings, marketing material, presentations (e.g. to Apple, Fitbit, pharmaceutical companies), and peer-reviewed articles. Chandra has over 100 scientific publications, book chapters, and op-eds. She has also raised millions from the National Institutes of Health, foundations, and pharmaceutical and wearable device companies for her work. After graduating from OHS in 1997, Chandra double majored in psychology and sociology at California State University, San Marcos, graduating summa cum laude in 2001 with the Chancellor’s award (the university’s top scholar). She went on to earn a master’s degree, quantitative methods certificate, and Ph.D. in social psychology from the University of Connecticut, and a second master’s degree in public health (MPH) from Northwestern University (NU) Feinberg School of Medicine. While getting her MPH, Chandra was a health services research postdoctoral fellow at NU and data analyst at the American Medical Association. Today, Chandra is the Chief Behavioral Officer at Lirio – an artificial intelligence company using behavioral science to improve patient health, reduce energy use, and keep the lights on for low-income customers. Prior to joining Lirio, Chandra was Vice President of Health and Behavioral Informatics at One Drop. Before One Drop, she was Assistant Professor of Medicine and Biomedical Informatics and Co-Director of the Center for Health Education and Health Behavior at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Arts

Dee Archer – Class of 1967

Denise “Dee” Archer has a rich history rooted in jazz, blues and rock ‘n’ roll. Dee’s mother, Billie Rogers, was a top jazz trumpet player and her father, Jack, was agent to many of the most famous jazz and rock ‘n’ roll artists of the 1950’s & 60’s. At age 8, Dee began studying acting with the renowned Helen Menken at American Theatre Wing in NYC. After years spent in musical theatre, Dee was chosen to be a member of the famous singing group “The Young Americans” in her senior year at OHS, which culminated in a co-hosting performance with Eddie Fisher on the TV show, Hollywood Palace. In 1969, Dee co-founded the legendary So-Cal rock band, The Road Home, which included Oceanside companions, Bill Sprouse, Jim Sims and Pete Wickersham. After playing to standing room-only crowds for 2 years, their album “Peaceful Children” was released on ABC/Dunhill Records. Moving on to become a prolific songwriter and form her own Dee Archer Band in the 1980’s, Dee played top original music clubs and concert venues throughout the US from 1978-1983, opening on tour for B.B. King, Joe Cocker, and Stephen Stills, as well as singing background vocals on Rod Stewart’s “Foolish Behavior” album. In the mid-80’s Dee began a surprising, meteoric 30+ year career as an entrepreneur and senior executive in the mobile phone industry. Today, Dee is a soulful jazz and blues singer, songwriter and keyboardist best known for touching the hearts and souls of her audiences with her passionate live performances.

Athletics

L.J. Richards – Class of 1957

John “L.J.” Richards was born and raised in Oceanside. Living just a few blocks from the beach, at the age of twelve L.J. joined the Junior Life Guards, which began a lifelong passion for the ocean. At the age of 13, his mother gave him his first surfboard; later he became a founding member of the Oceanside Surf Club. During his surfing career he was featured in several surf films produced by Bud Brown, Bruce Brown, Greg Noll, John Severson and Grant Roloff. His search for waves has taken L.J. all over the world: Hawaii, Australia, Tahiti, France, Mexico, Indonesia, Fiji, and Costa Rica. By the 1960’s he was already considered a surf legend. In 1963, L.J. was the West Coast Surfing Champion; this being followed by second place in the United States Invitational. In 1964 he was invited to the inaugural World Championship in Sydney, Australia where he finished fourth. Throughout his lifetime L.J. has worked as a Lifeguard for the State of California and as a fireman for the Encinitas Fire Department. L.J’s accomplishments include: being the first recipient of the LeRoy Grannis Waterman’s Award; induction into the International Surfing Hall of Fame and inclusion in the Surfing Walk of Fame in Huntington Beach, California. He is especially proud of his 26-year affiliation with UCSD’s Luau & Legends of Surfing Fundraiser for Cancer Research, which has raised millions of dollars. L.J. is retired; he and his wife, Kim, reside in Carlsbad. They have three daughters and nine grandchildren.

Business

Albert Wright – Class of 1969

Albert is the third son of Reverend Wendell W. Wright, Senior, and Barbara C. Wright. Albert and his brother Wendell are both proud to be members of the OHS Hall of Fame. After graduating from OHS, Albert attended MiraCosta College and Southern Utah State College where he majored in business and participated in basketball and track. Albert left college in 1973 and started work to support his new family. Although his dreams were altered, his determination never changed. In 1975, Albert and his family moved to Bend, Oregon where he had the good fortune of landing a job as a United Parcel Service driver. UPS provided a good living and the opportunity for advancement, and advance he did! In 1978, Albert was promoted to Driver Supervisor. This was followed by several other management positions. Albert finally landed in the Industrial Engineering (IE) Function. He managed Industrial Engineering Functions in Oregon, Iowa, New Jersey and California before being promoted to manage the Pacific IE Region. This has led to further promotions as Industrial Engineering Coordinator, Strategic Planning Manager, District Manager and Plant Engineering Manager. In 2004, Albert was promoted to the United Parcel Service’s Global Engineering Manager, responsible for Industrial, Plant and Automotive Engineering worldwide, and a three million dollar budget. During his career he also made time to mentor others and serve on various non-profit boards. Albert’s wife, Denise, and his five daughters Tasha, Keely, Mandisa, Quinlyn and Jasmine, have served as the motivation and inspiration behind his success.

Community Service

Bill Dominguez – Class of 1956

Bill Dominguez is a lifelong resident of North County. He attended Pine Street School in Carlsbad, and in 1956 graduated from Oceanside-Carlsbad High School. He then continued his education at MiraCosta College and San Diego State University where he received his BA in Public Administration. Bill served for 10 years as the Executive Assistant to the Fifth District County Supervisor’s office, serving North County. He also served as Project Coordinator for the Transborder Affairs Office, which included liaison between the US and Mexico border. California Governor Deukmejian appointed him as Assistant to the Director of the State Department of Social Services. He has also held various positions in the savings and loan and banking industries. Bill has provided his skills as a community volunteer member of the Carlsbad Planning Commission, the Carlsbad Cablevision Commission, the Sister City Commission, General Plan Review Committee, and a founding member of the Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation. While president of the Carlsbad Jaycees, he was instrumental in getting the swimming pool at the Carlsbad Boys and Girls Club. Bill also served as Chair of the California Conservation Corps Advisory Committee, was a founding member of the BECA Education Foundation and the Carlsbad Charitable Foundation, and a graduate of LEAD San Diego. Bill and his wife were selected as Carlsbad Citizens of the Year for 2016 for their involvement and volunteer activities in the community. Bill is a US Army veteran, and resides in Carlsbad with his wife, Bonnie.

Public Service

Courtney (Dryden) Rogers – Class of 1976

Courtney Rogers was an OHS Class of 1976 graduate and JROTC cadet. Her father, Marine Aviator, Major Ralph Dryden, was killed in Vietnam in 1968. After graduating with a degree in International Relations and Soviet Studies from the University of Southern California, she continued the tradition of military service by serving 14 years active duty as an Air Force Intelligence Officer, Targeting Officer, and Nuclear advisor to the National Command Authority aboard the EC-135 Looking Glass. She served on the ground during Operation Just Cause in Panama against then Dictator Manuel Noriega. She and her husband, Captain Mike Rogers, left active duty after their first daughter, Eryn, was born. Mike entered the private sector and Courtney transferred to the Tennessee Air National Guard assigned as the Aerial Port Squadron Commander and then retiring as the Wing Inspector General. While in the Air National Guard, she took a position as Communications Manager for Bridgestone/Firestone North America Commercial Truck Tire Division. Following military retirement, Courtney was encouraged to run for political office. She served three terms in the Tennessee State House of Representatives (2012 – 2018) as Vice-Chair of the Transportation Committee and as a member of the Criminal Justice and Civil Justice Committees. After retiring from the legislature on January 22nd, 2019, she was appointed to serve on Governor Bill Lee’s cabinet as Commissioner of Veteran Services for the State of Tennessee. She and her husband live in Sumner County, Tennessee and now have three children, Eryn, Michael, and Kellen.
