Oceanside CA— The Oceanside Promise’s 3rdAnnual Love of Literacy Summer Reading Events kicked off on Thursday, June 20 at Libby Lake Park. The kick-off event was the first of four events designed to promote the importance of early literacy in Oceanside.
“This is my second year doing this event,” said Marine Gunnery Sergeant(GySgt) Brad Phillips after reading several books to an enthusiastic group of toddlers at the park. “I really enjoy this event and we like to do things that bring us closer to the community.”
The Marines are just one of the organizations participating in the Oceanside Promise ‘Love Of Literacy’ events this summer. Others include: Oceanside Unified School District, OUSD’s Fresh Choice Cafe, Oceanside Public Library Book Mobile and Reading Zone, Education Begins in the Home, Children’s Paradise, The Boys & Girls Club of Oceanside, Studio ACE, Vista Community Clinic’s A+ Dental Mobile, San Diego Health & Human Service Agency’s Nutrition Education and Obesity Prevention Programs, Palomar Family Counseling and the Oceanside Police Department.
Each event is anticipated to attract at least 500 families with young children for free food, fun, and literacy-based activities. Oceanside Unified School District’s Fresh Choice Café is hosting a barbecue to provide free meals to all children and their families in attendance as part of its Summer Meals program and a Mission Federal Credit Union sponsorship.
The next event is Wednesday, June 26: 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. located behind OHS at Center Avenue(Oceanside High School/Crown Heights) followed by the third event at John Landes Park on Wednesday, July 10: 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and at Joe Balderrama Park on Monday, July 15: 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
