Carlsbad CA— The Carlsbad Municipal Water District recently received the 2019 Project of the Year award from the American Public Works Association, for its Advanced Metering Infrastructure project. The awards ceremony will be held on May 16 in conjunction with National Public Works Week.
The Advanced Metering Infrastructure provides water meter data without the use of human meter readers. By successfully implementing Advanced Metering Infrastructure in 100 percent of the Carlsbad Municipal Water District’s service area, more than 30,000 meters are monitored in real-time to provide more efficient system maintenance, reduced water loss and increased water conservation. Improved leak detection can save residents and businesses millions of dollars.
Meter reading district-wide can now be completed in a single day – an 83 percent reduction in staff time. Average monthly customer service orders that previously required a staff person to perform a physical visit have been reduced by 63 percent.

Thanks to the success of the project, staff can enhance agency capabilities by re-focusing on other critical operational and maintenance activities. The project exemplifies the power of public works professionals applying technology, operations expertise and community values to deliver high quality infrastructure that saves precious natural resources.
