Thousands of Bike Commuters are Registered to Bike to Work on Thursday, May 16
San Diego County CA—The 29th Annual SANDAG Bike to Work Day, celebrated throughout the San Diego region, will fall on Thursday, May 16 from 6-9 a.m. The regional event has been hosted by SANDAG for decades to promote commuting to work by bike as a fun, environmentally friendly, and cost-saving alternative to driving.
Visit the 2019 SANDAG Bike to Work Day Pit Stop Map to see the 100 locations throughout San Diego County where bike riders can pick up a free Bike to Work Day t-shirt (sponsored by JUMP by Uber), grab refreshments and snacks, and get cheered on by pit stop volunteers from health care organizations, local businesses, municipalities, government agencies, colleges and schools, bike companies, and event sponsors.
“Hosting a Bike to Work Day pit stop is fun – we love bikes and we especially love bike commuters. It’s a great way for us to show some extra support for those who get up early to make the commute,” said Charlie Skerlecz, Owner of Cal Coast Bicycles, a Bike to Work Day pit stop host for its eighth year.
The 100 pit stops span throughout the county from San Ysidro to Lakeside to Oceanside – in 2018, a record high of 10,950 pit stop visits were recorded around the San Diego region.
Each pit stop host is encouraged to set up a fun and creative environment to cheer on riders on their way to work. Returning this year, SANDAG also will host a Facebook contest where participants can vote for their favorite pit stop.
For the first time, pit stop hosts will scan participants’ registration confirmation barcodes in an effort to better track participation and t-shirt distribution. SANDAG has taken this new approach in response to feedback from pit stop hosts. Registration is required for participants to receive their free t-shirt on Bike to Work Day.
Registration for the 29th Annual SANDAG Bike to Work Day is open. Thousands of riders have already registered to GO by BIKE to celebrate this year’s event.
