Oceanside CA—On Tuesday, February 5, 2019, at approximately 12:54pm, the Oceanside Police Department and Oceanside Fire Department responded to calls of a multiple vehicle collision in the intersection of Coast Highway and Oceanside Blvd. The deceased victims from this collision were identified as all part of the same family. Rufina Arango Rodriguez, 74-years old from Fallbrook, Eloina Arango, 56-years-old from Mexico, and Petra Arango, 40-years-old from Oceanside.
The collision occurred as a 2007 Toyota Tacoma truck, traveling southbound on Coast Highway, failed to stop for a red light and collided with a 2003 Mazda sedan traveling eastbound on Oceanside Blvd on a green light. The collision caused the Mazda to spin around violently causing two of its rear seat passengers to be ejected from the car onto the roadway. The Toyota truck stopped just south of the intersection.
The driver of the Toyota was evaluated on scene by medics and released. He has been identified as 19-year-old Mason Fish, who was evaluated on scene by officers and was later arrested for driving under the influence of a controlled substance.
A total of six victims were traveling in the Mazda. Four patients were transported; two to Scripps La Jolla Medical Center, one patient to Rady Children’s Hospital and one patient taken to Tri-City Medical Center. An additional Oceanside Fire Deputy Chief was added to the incident to handle Air Operations and both air ambulance helicopters were landed on Coast Hwy, just south of the accident scene.
The passengers injured in the Mazda have been identified as, Aquilino Arango Ojeda, 82-years-old from Fallbrook, Rey David Velasco Herrera, 43-years-old from Oceanside, and a 13 year old juvenile. All are expected to recover from their injuries.
