Update: The name of the Deputy who was involved in this shooting incident has been identified as Deputy Kai Bowman. Deputy Bowman has been with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department for approximately 5 years.
Oceanside CA— The Detectives from the Oceanside Police Department Investigations Division are continuing to investigate the Deputy involved shooting which took place December 20, 2017. The Oceanside Police Department has identified the person who was shot by the San Diego County Sheriff’s Deputy as Javier Gomez. Mr. Gomez was born on September 2, 1976 and was a resident of Oceanside, California at the time this incident occurred. His next of kin has been notified.
The Deputy involved in this shooting was wearing a body worn camera. Detectives from the Oceanside Police Department have reviewed the footage from this device relevant to this incident.
On Wednesday, December 20th, 2017 at approximately 3:02 pm the Oceanside Police Department Dispatch received a radio call of a San Diego County Sheriff’s Deputy being in pursuit of a “Hit and Run” suspect in the City of Oceanside.
Prior to cover units arriving on scene to assist the Deputy, the suspect stopped his vehicle in the 3100 block of Camarillo Avenue and fled on foot. The Deputy pursued the driver on foot to the intersection of Roselle Avenue and Camarillo Avenue. Moments later, the suspect, Javier Gomez, produced a handgun and the Deputy fired his duty weapon. Mr. Gomez was struck and fell to the ground. Other Deputies subsequently arrived on scene and began providing medical aid to the suspect until Paramedics arrived. Mr. Gomez was pronounced dead at the scene.
During the initial investigation, a handgun was located at the scene. A female who was a passenger in the vehicle was detained by Detectives, interviewed, and subsequently released.
