Update 1900hrs: Today, December 24, 2017, the 87-year-old victim succumbed to injuries sustained in the hit and run. Deputies contacted and arrested Alexander Vasquez (02-19-93) as he was walking away from the vehicle. Vasquez has been booked for hit and run causing serious injury/death and vehicular manslaughter. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the collision.
Encinitas CA— Saturday evening, December 23, 2017, just after 6:00pm, San Diego County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a vehicle versus pedestrian, hit and run accident in Encinitas.
An 87-year-old male was walking in the crosswalk near the intersection of Balour Drive and San Abella Drive when he was struck by a pickup truck traveling northbound on Balour.
The driver of the pickup truck fled the scene leaving the victim on the roadway.
Multiple deputies responded to the area to render aid, secure the accident scene and search for the suspect vehicle. The victim was transported by ambulance to Scripps Hospital in La Jolla where he is being treated for life-threatening injuries including a ruptured aorta, a ruptured kidney as well as a broken leg. He is listed in critical condition.
The suspect vehicle was located by deputies several blocks away from the collision. A subject was seen walking away from the general area of the vehicle and was detained. Deputies observed fresh blood droppings on his shoes and believe he was inside the truck. The Investigation is still on-going and the victims name has not been released.
