San Diego County CA— On November 9, 2017 at approximately 3:51 am the California Highway Patrol was requested to take over a pursuit initiated by the San Diego Police Department. CHP successfully took over the pursuit northbound 1-5 near Gilman Drive. The vehicle, a tan 1985 Chevrolet/Coachmen recreational vehicle (RV) driven by 61-year-old, James Bruce Golden continued on I-5 northbound toward Orange County.
A spike strip was successfully deployed near La Costa Canyon Road that eventually disabled the two front tires of the RV. As the vehicle neared Oceanside Boulevard, the tires had deteriorated and the vehicle was driving on the metal rims causing sparks. He continued at speeds ranging from 75 to 55 miles per hour on two front rims with no tires. At approximately 4:44 am, the disabled RV slowed and stopped south of Avenida Magdalena.
Mr. Golden and a female passenger initially refused to exit the vehicle. After approximately 20 minutes of negotiation with Mr. Golden, he and the passenger exited the vehicle and were peacefully taken into custody at approximately 5:10am.
After being taken into custody Mr. Golden complained of chest pain and was checked by a medic unit that was standing by prior to the conclusion of the standoff. The medic unit transported him to Mission Hospital in Orange County where he was released to the care of the hospital.
The female passenger was released and not charged. Mr. Goldman will be facing felony evading, and driving under the influence of drugs charges.
Two dogs were located within the RV and were released to the female passenger.
The I-5 Northbound traffic lanes were closed for approximately twenty minutes during the standoff, while the I-5 Southbound lanes were closed for approximately ten minutes.
