Oceanside CA— Late this morning, August 31, 2017, just before 11:00am, the Oceanside Police Department responded to calls of a serious injury traffic collision involving a vehicle and a bicyclist on SR-76 at Melrose Dr.
Upon arrival, officers located a male lying in the roadway. It was determined by officers that the bicyclist was traveling westbound SR-76 while riding within the designated bicycle lane when a 2001 Honda Accord, which was also traveling westbound SR -76, veered into the bicycle lane and struck the bicyclist. Despite life saving measures, the bicyclist was later declared deceased.
The driver of the Honda Accord was identified as Felix Ruizbazan of Oceanside. Ruizbazan was contacted by officers at the scene of the collision and has been arrested for an outstanding misdemeanor warrant and driving on a suspended license.
The Oceanside Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team is currently investigating this collision.
Traffic will be diverted around this intersection until approximately 2:00 P.M.
Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in this collision.
The decedent’s name is being withheld pending the notification of the next of kin.
