Del Mar CA— The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office has completed the autopsy related to this investigation and positively identified the suspect as 34 year-old transient Emmanuel Ibarra. The cause of death was determined to be multiple gunshot wounds.
Shortly after the attack, deputies located a man in the 3200 block of Camino Del Mar in the city of Del Mar matching the description given by witnesses. Deputies contacted Ibarra who was still armed with the knife near the train tracks under the Via del la Valle overpass. Ibarra came from behind a concrete bridge support, knife in hand and quickly moved toward the deputy closest to him. That deputy immediately began backing away from Ibarra and lost his footing falling back onto the ground. The second deputy yelled at Ibarra who turned his attention toward him. Ibarra immediately charged the second deputy while still armed with the knife. That deputy fired his Department issued handgun, striking Ibarra. Additional deputies arrived at the scene and were able to move the knife away from Ibarra, making the area safe for medics to enter and administer first aid.
The victim in this case has been identified as Robin Rodriguez, manager of the Rubio’s Restaurant in Solana Beach. While examining the scene, homicide detectives located the knife near where Ibarra was shot. The tip of the knife appeared to have been broken off. At the hospital, doctors removed what appeared to be the tip of the knife from Rodriguez’ head. Rodriguez remains at an area hospital but is expected to make a full recovery.
