Oceanside CA— Last night, May 5, 2017 at 9:37 p.m., Oceanside Police dispatchers received a 9-1-1 call regarding a traffic collision involving a pedestrian. Oceanside Police and Oceanside Fire units responded to the scene and determined the following:
The pedestrian, a 39-year-old white male, was crossing Mission Avenue, mid-block and outside of the crosswalk, when he was struck by a pickup truck traveling westbound. The pickup struck the victim knocking him to the pavement. Oceanside Police and Oceanside Fire units arrived on scene within 2 minutes but the pedestrian had already succumbed to his injuries.
Witnesses at the scene reported seeing another vehicle strike the pedestrian after he was on the ground. The second vehicle did not stop at the scene. The witnesses were able to provide some details and a partial description of the second vehicle.
Westbound Mission Ave. was closed for approximately 2 hours at the entrance to I-5 northbound, westbound, across the bridge to Pirates Cove.
On April, 16, 2017, Easter Sunday, a woman was struck and killed, by a hit and run driver, approximately 300 yards east of this incident, also on the westbound lane of Mission Ave.
The Medical Examiner was notified and the name of the victim is being withheld pending next of kin notification.
The driver of the pickup was interviewed on scene and released. Based on the preliminary investigation it does not appear that alcohol, drugs or speed was a factor in the collision.
The investigation is ongoing. The Oceanside Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team is conducting the investigation. Anyone with information regarding this collision is asked to call Accident Investigator Bryan Hendrix at (760) 435-4882.
