UPDATE: The San Diego County Medical Examiners office has identified of the victim in this incident as Victor Velez from Camp Pendleton.
Oceanside CA— On January 21, 2017, at 4:30 pm Oceanside Police dispatchers received a report of a vehicle versus pedestrian collision on SR-76 eastbound at Douglas Drive.
Officers arrived on scene and found an unresponsive male in the roadway. They immediately began CPR. Oceanside Fire Department transported the victim by ambulance to Tri City Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries.
Oceanside Police Department Traffic Services Unit responded and assumed the investigation shutting down SR-76, eastbound, for several hours between Foussat and Douglas.
The investigation revealed that a forty-three year old male, Victor Velez, active duty Navy living aboard Camp Pendleton, parked and exited his vehicle on the right shoulder, possibly to address a mechanical problem, when he was struck by a box truck traveling in the number two lane. The driver of the box truck was identified as a fifty-three year old Fallbrook resident, male.
Neither alcohol nor speed are believed to be a factor in this collision based upon the preliminary investigation.
The investigation is continuing. Although there were witnesses to the collision, the Oceanside Police Department is requesting that anyone with information regarding the collision call Officer David Paul at (760) 435-4431.
