Oceanside CA— Longtime Oceanside resident, Silvia Spiva was named Oceanside Senior Citizen of the Year for 2016 during a brief ceremony held today in conjunction with the Oceanside Senior Health and Wellness Expo at the Civic Center Plaza.
Sylvia is a local business owner and has been a volunteer with MainStreet Oceanside for over 10 years, serving as a Board Member; is a member of the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce, is the current Chair of the Sunset Market; is a member and trustee of the Oceanside Elks Club #1561 and formerly served as a board member for Visit Oceanside.
Silvia has volunteered her time fundraising for the Oceanside Police Departments’ K-9 bullet-proof vests, the Elks Club, Veterans, Wounded Warriors, feeding the homeless and local Scout troops.
The proclamation presented to Silvia, by Oceanside Mayor, Jim Wood reads, in part, that “Silvia is a very kind-hearted and generous person who puts others first, and dedicates herself to the community and to making Oceanside a better place for residents and visitors to live, work and play.”
There were six nominees for this year’s award; Rhea Amid, Dr. Adrianne Hakes, Willie Little, Jim Schroder and Gail Wells.
“All the nominees are super deserving, fantastic people.” said Eileen Lohner-Turk, Division Manager of Oceanside Parks and Recreation, “They’ve done so many things in our community, many of them behind the scenes. You wouldn’t even know they were doing it and we all benefit from their hard work.”
Silvia received a goody bag including a $75 Gift Certificate to Dominic’s Restaurant at the Harbor. Mayor Wood proclaimed October 13th as Sylvia Spiva Day in Oceanside.
