Oceanside CA— A fire in a detached three car garage located directly across from the Oceanside Civic Center complex caused approximately $20,000 in damage late Monday evening.
Firefighters from the Oceanside Fire Department were dispatched to the reported fire at 11:33 pm. Since the incident location is just around the corner from their station, the first units were on scene less than 3 minutes later and found heavy smoke coming from a detached garage.
The initial arriving crews pulled attack lines to keep the fire from spreading to the nearby main house and the house next door. Subsequent crews began evacuating those two structures and then began opening up the individual garage doors in order to make access to the fire area. Once fire crews cut through the heavy wooden garage doors they were able to extinguish the fire, bringing it under control within 15 minutes of arrival. Additional crews from the Carlsbad Fire Department were also at the scene and stood by to assist as needed.
An investigator from the Oceanside Fire Department responded to the scene in order to determine the cause of the fire. The investigation is currently ongoing. The fire was confined to the garage and total damage has been estimated at $20,000, of which half is to the garage structure itself and half to the contents stored within it.
There was only one vehicle inside the three separate garage bays and it suffered only minor smoke and water damage. The rest of the bays were used as work spaces or for storage.
There were no injuries to firefighters and all of the evacuated residents were back in their houses within 30 minutes.
4 Engines, 1 Truck, 1 Ambulance, 1 Investigator responded to the incident with mutual aid provided by one Battalion Chief and one Engine from the Carlsbad Fire Department.
