Oceanside CA— Just after 4:30pm on Sunday, October 30, 2016, an Officer from the Oceanside Police Department conducted an enforcement stop on a vehicle in the 200 block of Barnes Street for violating the vehicle code. A passenger in the vehicle, later identified as Michael Ruben Mejia, a 21-year-old Carlsbad resident, fled from the vehicle.
While Officers were checking the area for the suspect, Mejia attempted to gain entry into a residence in the 1700- block of Dixie St. After not being able to make entry into the residence, Mejia got into the passenger seat of a passing vehicle and attempted to steal the vehicle. The driver refused to comply with Mejia, so he exited the vehicle and fled into a yard of an additional residence in the 1700 block of Dixie St.
Mejia entered the residence, which was occupied by a 22-year-old man. Police Officers who were continuing to check the area for the suspect were alerted that Mejia was hiding inside the residence. Officers made contact with the 22-year-old resident who confirmed Mejia, who was unknown to the man, was hiding inside. After Mejia refused to comply with Officers orders, a Police K-9 was utilized in taking Mejia into custody. Mejia was discovered to have two active felony warrants for his arrest.
Mejia was later booked into the Vista Detention Facility for burglary, attempted carjacking, and false imprisonment.
The investigation is ongoing and will be conducted by the Oceanside Police Department.
