Carlsbad CA— Early this morning, November 12, 2015, at approximately 2:00 a.m., deputies from the Sheriff’s Transit Enforcement Unit responded to a train versus pedestrian collision on the railroad tracks at milepost marker 229.38, which is near the intersection of Oak Street and Washington Street, in the city of Carlsbad.
A northbound Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) freight train struck a male pedestrian who was seen lying next to the railroad tracks. According to witnesses, as the train approached the location, the male rolled onto the tracks and was struck.
The BNSF freight train had activated its emergency braking system upon first seeing the male pedestrain, but was unable to stop prior to the collision.
The male was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The Sheriff’s Transit Enforcement Unit will be handling the investigation.
