Oceanside CA— On September 17, 2015 at approximately 10:20 p.m., a passing motorist and a California Highway Patrol officer both observed a person’s body lying on the north shoulder of SR-76 between N. Santa Fe Avenue and College Boulevard. The passerby called 911 and the CHP officer stopped to check on the subject.
The officer discovered a 40-year-old Oceanside resident had been struck by a westbound vehicle and was near death from his injuries. The investigation revealed the victim was walking on the shoulder at the time he was struck and was not in the traffic lanes.
The victim was transported to Scripps Memorial Hospital with life-threatening injuries. He was treated for multiple broken bones (28 total), internal injuries, and a traumatic brain injury. The victim’s right leg was so badly damaged it had to be amputated. So far the subject has survived his injuries but will have lifelong medical problems.
The Oceanside Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team is asking for the public’s help to identify the driver and vehicle involved in this horrific collision. Anyone with information is asked to contact Traffic Investigator Yanci Blackwell at (760) 435-4801.
