Escondido CA— This morning, April 24, 2015 at about 8:06 a.m., the Escondido Police and Fire Departments were dispatched to the area of Mission Ave. and Quince St. for a vehicle vs. pedestrian collision. Officers arrived on scene and found a female pedestrian with significant injuries in the roadway.
Preliminary investigation indicates the unidentified female was panhandling from the raised center median at the intersection. She was standing on the Mission Ave. median west of the intersection. According to witnesses, eastbound traffic on Mission Ave. stopped for a red light and the female left the median, entered the roadway, and was given money by the driver of a full-size pickup truck pulling a double-axle trailer. The trailer was full of sand and concrete.
The light for eastbound traffic turned green and the driver of this same pickup began to move. The female pedestrian attempted to return to the median and stumbled and fell between the rear of the pickup and the trailer. She was subsequently run over by both rear tires on the left side of the trailer.
The pedestrian sustained multiple serious injuries and was transported to the hospital by Escondido Fire Department paramedics. She was transported in grave condition, and ultimately died as a result of her injuries. She remains unidentified and updated information regarding her identity will be released by the San Diego County Medical Examiner.
The driver of the pickup truck was not injured and remained at the scene. The driver was not cited. Neither alcohol or distracted driving are believed to be factors in the collision.
