San Marcos CA— Early this morning, January 15, 2015 at approximately 4:29 AM, a 19 year-old male was driving a 2015 Blue Mazda 6 eastbound on State Route 78 west of Nordahl Rd., in the #2 lane, within the San Marcos City Limits. The driver of the Mazda 6 was approaching the rear of a Blue 2002 Volvo S80 at a high rate of speed. The Volvo S80 was being driven by a 37 year-old male.
Due to the 19 year-old male’s unsafe speed for slower traffic ahead, he was unable to take evasive action in time and struck the rear of the Volvo. The Volvo and the Mazda traveled out of control in a southeasterly direction and came to rest along the right shoulder.
A short time after the collision stabilized, the driver of the Blue 2015 Mazda 6 abruptly exited his vehicle and ran northbound across the freeway lanes. The 19 year old male ran across the eastbound lane of SR-78 and hopped over the center divider wall. He continued to run northbound and was struck as he ran across the #1 and #2 lanes of westbound State Route 78 by two different vehicles nearly simultaneously. Following that collision, a 67 year-old male driving a White 2006 Mercedes E350 struck the 19 year-old male’s vehicle which was partially obstructing the slow lane at the initial collision scene.
The driver of the Mercedes sustained minor injuries which were tended to by on-scene emergency personnel. The 19 year-old male succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the collision scene in the westbound lanes of State Route 78. Drugs or Alcohol are not suspected at this time. However, this fatal collision investigation is ongoing.
