San Marcos CA— Last night, January 30, 2015 through early this morning, the AVOID the 8 on 78 task force comprised of deputies from the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department San Marcos Traffic Unit and officers of the California Highway Patrol, Carlsbad Police Department, Escondido Police Department, San Diego County Probation Department, Cal-State San Marcos Police Department, and Palomar College Police Department conducted a D.U.I checkpoint in the 1300 block of West San Marcos Boulevard.
Checkpoints are placed in locations that have the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence and provide the greatest safety for Deputies and the public.
Results of the DUI Checkpoint:

• Total Cars through the Checkpoint: 2737
• Total Cars into the Checkpoint: 1021
• Cars Sent to Secondary for Evaluation: 51
• DUI Evaluations: 14
• DUI Alcohol Arrests: 9
• DUI Drug Arrests: 2
• Other Arrest 2

20 vehicles were impounded and 44 citations issued for violations including driving without a license, driving on a suspended license, allowing an unlicensed driver to drive, and possession of marijuana in a vehicle.

D.U.I/Driver’s License checkpoints lower D.U.I deaths and injuries by deterring those who might drive drunk or drugged, by bringing about more awareness, and by encouraging the use of sober designated drivers. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says checkpoints provide the most effective results of any D.U.I enforcement strategy and yielding cost savings of $6 for every $1 spent.
