Encinitas CA- Just before 10:00am, Sunday, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department received a transferred call from the California Highway Patrol of a vehicle versus bicycle traffic collision near the I-5 ramp to Manchester Avenue, Encinitas.
When deputies arrived, they found the collision had actually occurred near the entrance to Mira Costa College. Based on the statements of the parties involved and uninvolved witnesses, a 56 year old male bicyclist was riding eastbound on Manchester Avenue in the dedicated bicycle lane. A 2007 Honda sedan, driven by a 61 year old female, was also headed the same direction, in the lane adjacent to the bike lane.
Preliminary witness statements indicated that the Honda veered into the bicycle lane for an unknown reason, striking the bicyclist. The driver stopped immediately. The bicyclist was taken by paramedic ambulance to Scripps La Jolla Hospital’s Trauma Unit with serious, but not life-threatening injuries. Traffic Investigator Brenda Sipley is handling the collision investigation.
