‘A Fair to Remember’ A Celebration of World’s Fairs and Balboa Park
Del Mar CA– The theme for the 2015 San Diego County Fair, presented by Albertsons/Sav-on, was announced today by San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer and 22nd District Agricultural Association President, Frederick Schenk during a news conference at the Del Mar Fairgrounds.
‘A Fair to Remember, A Celebration of World’s Fairs and Balboa Park,’ commemorates the centennial anniversary of the 1915 Panama – California Exposition held in Balboa Park. The theme of the Fair will unite the largest event in Southern California and fourth largest Fair in North America with a National Historic Landmark and San Diego treasure known as Balboa Park. World’s Fairs have long been a platform for education, culture, technology, food and new inventions. What do the Ferris Wheel, bicycle, telephone, ice cream cone, mustard, air conditioning and the Ford Mustang all have in common? They were all introduced at a World’s Fair! The Fair will also demonstrate how agriculture was and still is the core of all Fairs and Expositions.
Focusing on the unique promotional opportunity uniting two major San Diego venues, Mayor Faulconer addressed the crowd located in the Paddock at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, “The 2015 centennial celebration will bring our city together through events that celebrate, elevate and promote Balboa Park,” stated Mayor Faulconer. “This partnership with the San Diego County Fair is a perfect fit for the community-focused centennial. It celebrates Balboa Park’s history, elevates the centennial to a regional event and promotes San Diego’s crown jewel on whole new a level,” he added.
Also present was the 22nd DAA President, Frederick Schenk who stated, “The Panama-California Centennial Celebration allows us a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to unite and acclaim two premier events and attractions located in Southern California. The 2015 San Diego County Fair theme exhibit will include special displays that will showcase the 1915 Exposition and Balboa Park as it stands today. The popular theme exhibit will also explore and highlight the inventions and delicacies that were first introduced at a World’s Fair over the last century and are still enriching our lives today.”
The dates for 2015 San Diego County Fair were approved previously at the 22nd District Agricultural Association Board of Directors meeting held earlier this month at the Del Mar Fairgrounds.
Fairgrounds General Manager and CEO, Timothy J. Fennell was also present and welcomed the Mayor of San Diego and those attending today’s news conference, “In my opinion the San Diego County Fair is the best Fair in the USA and always has something for everyone. The 2015 Fair will be unique as it will showcase two major Southern California destinations in San Diego County. Our Fair theme exhibit will highlight Balboa Park and the history of World’s Fairs in the past centuries, and by doing so will help lay the ground work for future Fairs across America and the World.”
The Fair will open on Friday, June 5 at 4:00 p.m. continuing through Sunday, July 5, 2015. Take a break from the Friday freeway and make it your “Friday-Fairday!” The Fair will be closed on Mondays and the first two Tuesdays.
The San Diego County Fair is the largest annual event in San Diego County and one of the ten largest Fairs in North America, drawing more than 1.4 million visitors annually.
