Carlsbad CA– On Tuesday, September 9, the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) released the 2014 mid-year crime statistics.
In the bulletin when compared to 2013, SANDAG reported countywide trends that included an 11 percent decrease in the FBI Index crime rate per 1,000 population, a 1 percent decrease in the Violent Crime Rate per 1,000 population and 13 percent decrease in the Property Crime Rate per 1,000 population.
The City of Carlsbad’s crime rate showed similar decreases. When compared to 2013 the report showed a 15 percent decrease in the FBI Index Crime Rate, a 4 percent decrease in the violent crime rate and a 16 percent decrease in the property crime rate.

Further, the report indicated the City of Carlsbad realized decreases in every crime category including Rape, Robbery, Assault, Burglary, Larceny, Motor Vehicle Theft and Arson with the exception of Homicide that changed from zero reported cases in 2013 to one reported case in 2014.
“It is important to note that reported crime rates can fluctuate from month to month with certain months typically having more reported crime cases than others,” said Police Department Public Information Officer Jodee Sasway. “For example, reported thefts from vehicles tends to increase during summer months and reported residential burglaries can increase during heat waves. It is key to wait until the end of the year to fully understand the complexity of the 2014 crime rates when compared to 2013.”
Also, to continue these downward trends it is important to remain alert and remove the opportunities for crime. Here are a few tips:

• Always lock your car and take the keys.
• The best place to park your car is in the garage.
• If you cannot take property with you, leave it at home and not behind in an unattended car.
• Always secure your home’s windows and doors before you leave your house.
• Always report crime and suspicious activity by calling 760-931-2197 when it is taking place.
