Encinitas CA– Early this morning, August 9, 2014, at 1:48 am, Sheriff’s deputies responded to a train versus pedestrian collision on the railroad tracks at mile post marker 238.2, which is near the 900 block of South Coast Highway 101, in the city of Encinitas.
A 40 year-old male was struck by a northbound BNSF (Burlington Northern Santa Fe) freight train. According to witnesses, as the train was approaching the location, the victim was observed sitting on the west rail of track number two with his head lying in his hands looking downward.
The train activated its horn and emergency braking system, but was unable to stop before striking the victim. The victim was pronounced deceased at the scene. The San Diego Sheriff’s Department’s Railroad Enforcement Unit responded to the scene and will be handling the investigation.
