Del Mar CA – The ticker ticked, the scanner scanned and the one millionth visitor to the 2014 San Diego County Fair, Fab Fair, presented by Albertsons/Sav-on, has been crowned! It was 4:18 p.m. and the lucky Fairgoer, Tania Cotta from Encinitas, who happened to be at the right place, at the right time, received all of the pomp and circumstance of British Royalty. “I was wondering what was going on when I walked through the gate because there were so many Fair workers lined up, and then WOW,” says Cotta. After confetti cannons burst and blow horns sounded, Cotta was adorned with Fair regalia and a slew of special gifts as the Fair staff and onlookers jammed to “Happy.” “My best friend, Nicole, and I wanted to visit the Fair today to ride rides, eat our favorite Fair food, and just hang out, and then this happened. I never win anything… I am so thankful for your generosity.”
This year – for the first time ever – the millionth fairgoer who passed through our gates received a Lifetime Fair Admission Pass, Fair Food vouchers worth more than $100, free concert tickets of their choice for any of the remaining shows, VIP tickets to The Big Bite Bacon Fest on July 5, tickets to Professional Bull Riding on August 16, and gifts from various vendors including a 4-burner Coleman grill, which retails for $700, courtesy of Carddine Home Resort Products (Julian Sanchez).
Very few county fairs top a million visitors each season, but that is NOT the case for the San Diego County Fair. In fact, not only did we surpass one million fairgoers today, but the ticker also brought the Fair past the 50 million mark (since attendance records were kept starting in 1947) with today’s milestone. Last year’s attendance was more than 1.4 million, and we have reached the million mark every year since 1989.
