Encinitas CA– The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office released the results of last nights DUI Checkpoints in Encinitas and San Marcos.
San Diego Sheriff’s Deputies and Officers from Coronado Police Department, Escondido Police Department, San Diego Harbor Police Department, San Diego County Probation Department, and the San Diego Police Department, as part of the AVOID the 16 Taskforce, conducted a DUI sobriety and driver’s license checkpoint in the 1800 block of Olivenhain Road in Encinitas, from 8:00 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. The purpose of the checkpoint was to remove impaired and/or unlicensed drivers from the roadway, public education, and deterrence to increase the safety of all drivers.
A total of 2,113 vehicles approached the checkpoint: 942 vehicles passed through the primary screening area of the checkpoint; and, 63 vehicles were directed to the secondary screening area for further investigation. Three drivers were evaluated for being under the influence and one driver was arrested for DUI – Alcohol. There were four drivers cited for driving on a suspended driver’s license, 15 drivers cited for not having a driver’s license, one juvenile driver cited for probationary driver license violation and 21 additional cites for other violations. A total of seven vehicles were towed.

San Marcos

Deputies from the San Marcos Traffic Unit conducted a D.U.I checkpoint in the city of San Marcos. The checkpoint was set up in the 100 block of West Mission Road. Checkpoints are placed in locations that have the greatest opportunity for contacting impaired drivers and provide the maximum safety for deputies and the public.

In addition, there were 9 vehicles impounded and 18 citations issued for various violations including driving without a license, driving on a suspended license, possession of Marijuana in a vehicle and open alcohol container in a vehicle.
This D.U.I/Driver’s License checkpoint lowers D.U.I deaths and injuries. A major component of these checkpoints is the deterrent effect it has on those who might drive drunk or under the influence of drugs. Checkpoints bring awareness and encourage everyone to use sober designated drivers.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), checkpoints have provided the most effective documented results of any of the D.U.I enforcement strategies, while also yielding considerable cost savings of $6 for every $1 spent.
