Oceanside and Fuji Japan have been celebrating their 25th years of sister city anniversary this year. Last July, a group of young students from Fuji has visited Oceanside to experience campus life at Mira Costa College and American life with host families. It was the first time for many students being abroad and “everything we do and see in Oceanside was the first time”.
The program was facilitated by Fuji Oceanside Friendship Association and officially supported by the city of Fuji. Twelve students and two supervisors from Fuji have visited Oceanside and met with Mayor Wood.
Dr. Kato, one of the supervisor of Fuji delegates who is the vice chair of Fuji Board of Education, has also met with Dr. Coleman, Oceanside Superintendent of School, to discuss about future collaboration in education including hiring of English assistant teacher in Fuji.
The group had also opportunity to look around downtown and beach together with volunteer students from Mira Costa College.
After their return, the Fuji delegates have reported to Mayor Konagai about their eye-opening experiences in Oceanside.
“It was the first time talking with foreign teenagers like me and we were able to communicate with body gesture and hand writing. I hope I can talk with them in English next time.”
“Host family was so kind that they held BBQ party and I was able to play with their children who were so cute.”
Next week, we will report Fuji Mayor Konagai visiting Oceanside Mayor Wood for 25th sister city anniversary event in August.
