Mt. Fuji is the highest mountain in Japan at a height of 3,776 meters or 12,388 feet. The mountain has long appealed to the Japanese for its beauty, familiarity and solemnity.
The beauty of the mountain lies in its symmetrical cone shape which is capped in snow in winter. The Japanese have a special attachment toward Mt. Fuji, considering it to be Japan’s symbol. Such affection can be seen in the popularity of the 36 depictions of Mt. Fuji by Hokusai of the early 19th century. Mt. Fuji has also been an object of religious worship, long regarded as a sacred mountain of the gods.
Fuji City, with the World Heritage site, Mount Fuji as a backdrop, has implemented the ‘Mt. Fuji Hyakkei Photo Contest’. One-hundred areas have been selected where Mt. Fuji and the city look their most beautiful.
