Oceanside CA— MiraCosta College is proud to be recognized as one of the few community colleges in the state to offer an accredited program for the California Registered Tax Preparer certification. With the college’s re-accreditation by the California Tax Education Council, MiraCosta students can be certified as a tax preparers while pursuing a lucrative career in taxation. MiraCosta’s Individual Income Tax course — written in an approachable, non-technical language — guides students through the complexities of taxation.
“With the re-accreditation, our students can work in a rewarding career that serves the needs of the community, explains Michael Deschamps, accounting faculty at MiraCosta College.
While taking Accounting 145 students will learn the facets of tax planning and preparation, including filing status, exemptions, income and exclusions, business expenses, itemized deductions, credits, capital gains, depreciation, and tax payments. They will also learn about the California tax code, the Franchise Tax Board and auditing.
“We are excited to provide a program that meets the interest of our students and allows them to serve the needs of the community,” said Al Taccone, dean of career education at MiraCosta College.
Students will be able to become a licensed certified tax preparer by completing 60 hours of instruction and earning a grade of C or better in the course. Students can then apply to the California Tax Education Council (CTEC) to receive their California Registered Tax Preparer certificate.
