Oceanside CA— Oceanside High School Spanish Club will again volunteer to assist at Dia de los Muertos at Mission San Luis Rey. Their teacher, Martha Stickles, had expressed to her students the importance of giving back to their community. Having lived and studied in Mexico, she saw many of the traditional holidays, Dia de los Muertos being one of them.
Many of the club members come from a Hispanic background and are fluent Spanish speakers. Martha reflected that she teaches Spanish to Spanish speakers to groom their Spanish writing and speaking for grammatical corrections.
This year she contacted the Event Coordinator of Oceanside’s Dia de los Muertos Festival to get the School Spanish Club involved again. She stressed that it was important that her students be involved with the festival because their ancestors had been celebrating this traditional holiday for thousands of years. It was important to their families that they understand the festival and components and how Oceanside, their community, has embraced this annual event.
Volunteers wishing to participate in the event may contact Cathy Nykiel. Information is available on the event website: http://www.mslrdiadelosmuertos.com.
