Oceanside CA— MiraCosta College’s massage therapy programs have been approved by the California Massage Therapy Council (CAMTC), a nonprofit organization charged with oversight of California’s massage businesses and schools.
Certification is necessary to ensure the training students receive will be accepted for CAMTC certification purposes. The state of California created the CAMTC by an act of the state legislature to ensure that certified therapists have completed sufficient training at approved schools, enabling consumers to easily identify credible massage professionals.
“Having a CAMTC-recognized certificate from MiraCosta College further ensures graduates’ employment opportunities in a career in massage therapy,” said Dr. Al Taccone, dean, School of Career and Technical Education & Workforce Development. “The clients of our graduates will be assured that their massage therapist has graduated from a program with the greatest of rigor and highest of standards.”
MiraCosta College offers certificates of achievement in Massage Therapist and Holistic Health Practitioner. The Holistic Health Practitioner certificate requires completion of a 1,000-hour program that includes advanced instruction of the body system, pathology, massage therapy techniques, bodywork assessment, theory, and application, in addition to business and ethics. The Message Therapist certificate requires 500 hours of training in massage therapy techniques, anatomy, pathology, physiology, and health and hygiene.
At MiraCosta College, students learn how to provide massage therapy as a health care professional. Graduates of the program seek employment in a variety of settings, such as physician offices, health and wellness centers, hotels and resorts, physical therapy centers, rehabilitation clinics and hospitals, sports organizations, day spas, cruise ships, and private practice.
After graduation, students are encouraged to take the Massage and Bodywork Licensing Examination (MBLEx) as part of their requirement to obtain a massage therapy license.

We recognize the challenges of maintaining a massage program with the high level of training required for CAMTC Certification,” wrote Joe Bob Smith, director of the Educational Standards Division for the California Ma ssage Therapy Council in a letter to Dr. Taccone. “As such, you should proudly display the Certificate of CAMTC School Approval, when received, in a visible area of the school as a sign of this accomplishment.”
