Oceanside CA— MiraCosta College’s Community Education and Workforce Development Program is offering the following not-for-credit career technical training courses this fall:
Manual Measuring Workshop
In the advanced manufacturing and engineering fields, it is imperative to know how to measure accurately to ensure quality. This15-hour class is an introduction to the importance of measuring and testing/inspection, the tools used, and the applications for the various different tools. Students will have lots of hands-on practice measuring using calipers, micrometers, and gauges. Note: Students should be familiar with the basics of blueprint reading. Fee: $75. Location: Technology Career Institute. Time: Tuesdays & Thursdays, 8/30–9/15, 3–5:30 p.m.
Welding and Metal Fabrication
This welding and metal fabrication class is a unique resource for all students. By exposing students to welding and other authentic manufacturing processes, this shop creates great possibilities, no matter how much (or little) experience you have.
Fee: $375. Location: San Dieguito High School Academy, 800 Santa Fe Drive, Encinitas. Time Options:15 Tuesdays, 8/30–12/13, 6–10 p.m. or 15 Thursdays, 9/1–12/15, 6–10 p.m.
Lean Manufacturing I
Lean manufacturing is the systematic method for eliminating waste within
a manufacturing system. This initial course will consist of 5S, 8 wastes, deep observation, value stream mapping, A3 one-page corrective action reports, and Kaizen events. This course provides practical application of LEAN tools that anyone can use to identify and minimize waste in their own area of control. Fee: $150. Location: Technology Career Institute. Time Options: Saturday & Sunday, 8/27 & 8/28, 9 a.m.–4 p.m. or Saturday & Sunday, 10/22 & 10/23, 9 a.m.– 4 p.m.
Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Operation
In this 112-hour class, the first day will include safety, an introduction to terminology and basic blueprint reading. The rest of the course will have lots of demonstration and hands-on instruction. Learn how to interpret G&M codes and operate both a HAAS CNC mill and lathe. Students will also get exposure to CAD/CAM software. Fee: $490. Location: Technology Career Institute. Time: 14 Saturdays, 9/10–12/17, 8 AM–4:30 p.m.
MATLAB
MATLAB is a scientific computing language and program platform widely used throughout industry. It is designed to simplify rapid development and prototyping of highly intensive applications. MATLAB is used in robotics, PLC design, electrical engineering, economics, financing, neural networks, video processing, image processing, data acquisition and more. This class explains the basics of matrix algebra with applications using the software. You will learn to build your own functions based on processing audio signals and images. Finally, you will learn to use the various toolboxes available in the student version of the software. Note: Students should have a strong basic math background and basic programming knowledge. Fee: $125. Location: Technology Career Institute. Time: 5 Saturdays, 9/10–10/8, 12–5 p.m.
Blueprint Reading I
This 15-hour, hands-on class helps students read and correctly interpret blueprints. Students will also get an opportunity to draw and edit simple blueprints through step-by-step development of multi-view drawings. Fee: $75. Location: Technology Career Institute. Time: Tuesdays & Thursdays, 9/6–9/22, 5–7:30 p.m.
