Carlsbad CA— The City of Carlsbad’s Summer Reading Program for adults, teens and children begins on June 27 and runs through Aug. 12 at all Carlsbad library locations. The program is free for all ages.
The theme for this year’s program is “On Your Mark, Get Set, Read!” encouraging readers of all ages to exercise their mind and become a reading Olympian.
The adult program focuses on readers ages 18 and up. Readers fill out review cards for every book they read or listen to and receive a ticket for a weekly drawing of a $20 bookstore gift card.
The teen program is designed for students from grades 7 to 12. The children’s program includes children ages 3 through grade 6. Readers can pick up a reading log at any city library location to record what they are reading. Books, magazines and newspapers can be counted on the reading log.
Teens and kids can take their reading logs and report to a city library as often as once a day. Each report earns a ticket for the weekly prize drawing. After seven reports, readers receive a summer reading program T-shirt. After 10 reports, readers receive complimentary passes to area museums and coupons to local establishments. Prizes are distributed while supplies last. Special events for children and teens are also planned at each library location.
The city also offers a program for babies and toddlers, from birth to age 3. Parents and childcare providers perform reading activities with little ones to earn a prize.
There is an opportunity to volunteer for the Summer Reading Program. Applications are being accepted through May 27. All program volunteers must sign up for a training shift and training for volunteers is required.
