The Padres and Komen San Diego encourage San Diegans to give themselves the gift of good health this Mother’s Day by getting screened for breast cancer on Saturday, May 11

San Diego CA— The San Diego Padres and Padres Foundation are partnering with Susan G. Komen San Diego—the County’s only organization that provides direct services to patients, invests in critical research and advocates for change—to provide San Diegans who are uninsured and underinsured access to mammograms and screenings at no cost to the patient on Saturday, May 11, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Petco Park’s Park at the Park. The Padres breast health screening event marks $3.2 million in Komen San Diego’s funding of screening and diagnostic services.

For more than a decade, Major League Baseball (MLB), with the support of all 30 teams, has dedicated Mother’s Day to raising breast cancer awareness. Locally, this will be the third year that the Padres have helped raise awareness for the importance of regular breast health screenings through an on-site event. In 2018, 50 women were screened at the event. There was a total of nine women with abnormal findings who were referred for further diagnostic screening and follow up care.

Komen San Diego once again to advocate for the breast health needs of San Diegans,” said Tom Seidler, Padres senior vice president, community and military affairs. “Breast cancer is a terrible disease, but with events like this, we can help save lives by ensuring community members have access to vital resources. There’s no better way to kick off Mother’s Day weekend than by putting yourself—and your health—first and getting screened for breast cancer.”

Every day in San Diego, six women are diagnosed, and one woman passes away from breast cancer. Early detection and effective treatment provide the best chance of survival—and that’s what this event is about. Komen San Diego’s sole mission is to save lives by finding research breakthroughs for breast cancer and ensuring all people receive the care they need. The organization does so by providing free mammograms, biopsies, ultrasounds, care coordination, education, research funding, financial assistance and more.

The May 11 event at Petco Park will provide free mammograms and clinical breast exams for California residents who are:

Uninsured or underinsured;

• Low-income;
• Experiencing a breast cancer symptom or are under 40 years old and have a concern;
• And have not had a mammogram in the past year (365 days)

If it hasn’t been a full year since your last mammogram and you need assistance, please dial 2-1-1 to speak to a specialist who can direct you appropriately. All participants will also receive a primary medical placement and be linked to a medical home, which is important for following up each year. Additional breast health information will also be available.
