Program Serves Thousands of San Diego Parents Annually
San Diego CA— Jewish Family Service of San Diego’s (JFS) Positive Parenting Program (PPP) has received a STARS Award from the Child Abuse Prevention Coordinating Council (CAPCC), honoring the program for demonstrated commitment to preventing child abuse in the San Diego County community. The fourth annual award ceremony was held on April 21 at the DoubleTree Hotel in Mission Valley.
STARS is an acronym for exemplary organizations and individuals who: Support children and parents in the community; Take a positive perspective; Address the issues; Recognize that parenting can be challenging and offer support; and Strengthen communities.
The Positive Parenting Program, funded by the County of San Diego, Health and Human Services, Behavioral Health Services, provides free parenting workshops in 130 schools and community sites each year to help parents and professionals learn simple and powerful strategies to strengthen families that will support the mental health of parents and their children.
“With nearly 97 percent of participants in the program seeing improvements in their children’s behavior, the program supports parents who are stressed, depressed, or struggling with their children’s behavior,” said Director of Positive Parenting Lea Bush. “We help parents feel more confident and prepared – and this award also helps recognize the passionate efforts of all those involved.”
Since the program’s start over six years ago, PPP has served more than 10,000 parents, benefiting more than 20,000 children. Research on PPP’s impact shows that children of participating parents communicate better, cooperate more, and show greater respect toward their parents, teachers, peers, and themselves.
JFS’s PPP has been held up as a national example and is based on Triple P America, a research-based program that has been shown to promote family harmony, reduce parent-child conflict, foster successful peer relationships, and prepare children for successful experiences at school.
JFS works with all parents regardless of income, religious beliefs, race or ethnicity. The program is designed for any parent who wants to improve their parenting skills and their relationship with their children.
