This year’s Fowler Global Social Innovation Challenge gathered participants from 26 universities across 12 countries to pitch their business plans in front of a panel of judges made up of San Diego’s industry and social good leaders. The students developed a nuanced understanding of an issue of their choice, identified gaps in the existing approaches and developed their plans for a solution.
The Fowler Global Social Innovation Challenge started at the University of San Diego in 2011, featuring only student groups from the university. Over the years, it has grown into a global program inviting students from around the world to present their ideas for changing the world.
With the annual showcase, USD’s Center for Peace and Commerce, a partnership between the Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies and the School of Business, changes the way these future leaders view business as a necessary element in creating social good.
“The Fowler Global Social Innovation Challenge inspires future leaders to shift the way they see business as a means for creating social good and making a difference in their communities,” said Amitkumar Kakkad, PhD, director of USD’s Center for Peace and Commerce and faculty member at the School of Business. “I’m confident tonight’s winners – and each participant – will be a positive force in our society. While tonight’s top winner, Hoola One, will be reducing plastics on our shores, all of our participants will contribute to a reduction in ignorance and indifference in the business world.”
