San Diego CA— The Elizabeth Hospice, a nonprofit healthcare leader serving San Diego County and Southwest Riverside County, is honored to be the recipient of a $10,000 grant from New York Life. The funds will enable The Elizabeth Hospice to continue to provide free on-campus support groups for children who are grieving the death of their special person.
“Children’s grief is more prevalent than many people realize,” said Jan Jones, President and Chief Executive Officer of The Elizabeth Hospice. “One in fifteen children in the U.S. will experience the death of a parent or sibling by age 18 (source: Judi’s House/JAG Institute, 2018). While losing a loved one is painful at any age, there can be lifelong consequences for children. These school-based support groups eliminate the financial, cultural and parental involvement barriers that often prevent children from receiving the grief support they need.”
“Before this group, I never talked about my Dad. I basically ignored his death, said Jillyan, a 15-year-old student at Mission Vista High School. “In these past few weeks, I’ve grown because I’m more open about my Dad to certain people. I still have a long way to go but because of this group at least I’m going in the right direction.”
