Prominent Transgender Woman of Color and Hate Crime Survivor, LGBTQ+ activist CeCe McDonald Will Deliver Keynote Address at May 11 Event
San Diego CA— The ACLU of San Diego & Imperial Counties will host its second annual Equity in Action conference at the University of San Diego’s Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice on May 11. The theme of the 2019 conference is Advancing Change Together.
The day-long event will feature plenaries, workshops and exercises for participants to deepen their knowledge of important social justice issues, forge strategic relationships, and sharpen their leadership, organizing and advocacy skills to achieve collective action.
LGBTQ+ activist CeCe McDonald will deliver the keynote address. A trans woman of color, McDonald gained international recognition after surviving a racist, transphobic attack and later, a broken justice system that convicted and incarcerated her for defending herself.
A hero to many trans people and others who see themselves in the struggle to overcome intolerance, injustice and hate, Rolling Stone praised McDonald as “an LGBT folk hero for her story of survival – and the price she paid for fighting back.” She is the subject of the acclaimed documentary, “FREE CeCe,” produced by transgender actress Laverne Cox.
