Father Joe’s Villages turns hundreds of residents into crowdfunding champions with A Short Walk Home
Walkers to pass through a giant front door at the finish line on August
San Diego CA– This summer, San Diego residents are lacing their sneakers and opening their wallets to play their part in solving the region’s homelessness crisis. Neighbors and coworkers are launching fundraising teams for Father Joe’s Villages’ second annual A Short Walk Home – San Diego’s only walk to end homelessness.
“By teaming up with family and friends, community members are building momentum to help those struggling with homelessness take meaningful steps toward a place to call home,” says Deacon Jim Vargas, president and CEO of Father Joe’s Villages.
On August 4, hundreds will join a kid- and dog-friendly 2-mile walk along the promenade at Spanish Landing Park. To reinforce Father Joe’s Villages’ focus on creating affordable housing for people experiencing homelessness, participants will walk through an oversized front door at the starting and finish lines to symbolize our neighbors coming home.
Walkers can register for A Short Walk Home as individuals or as part of a team. All participants are encouraged to set fundraising goals and crowd fund through their personal networks of people who want to make a difference in San Diego. Upon signing up, participants receive all the tools they need to reach out to friends, family and coworkers – plus opportunities to receive prizes by reaching key fundraising milestones.
“After weeks of fundraising, walking through the front door at the finish line will be more than a gesture of solidarity,” says Yvette Boodro, a volunteer fundraiser with Father Joe’s Villages’ Ladies Guild. “It’s inspiring to know that every dollar we raise gives people the support they need to transform their lives.”
Proceeds from A Short Walk Home will benefit Father Joe’s Villages’ efforts to provide emergency, transitional and permanent housing programs and other supportive services dedicated to helping people find their way home.
A Short Walk Home begins at 8 a.m. on August 4 at 3900 N Harbor Dr, San Diego. Registration is now open and costs range from $15 to $30, with special discounts for youth and military. For more information and to register, visit fjvwalkhome.com.
If you are unable to attend the walk, you can still help empower people who are homeless in San Diego by donating to Father Joe’s Villages. For more information about Father Joe’s Villages’ programs, please visit neighbor.org.
