Red envelopes are available at all of SDCCU’s 43 branch locations
San Diego County CA— San Diego County Credit Union® (SDCCU®), San Diego’s largest locally-owned financial institution, is proud to support the 2018 Lunar New Year. Through March 2, all SDCCU branch locations will have red envelopes (traditionally known as hong bao or lai see) for customers who participate in the Lunar New Year celebration. Lunar New Year starts February 16, 2018 and this year is the Year of the Dog.
Based on the lunar calendar, the Lunar New Year takes place on a different date each year. Celebrations last for over two weeks and often include firecrackers and lion dances.
Traditionally, red envelopes are given to children by their parents or family members wishing them health and good studies in the coming year. The red envelopes always have money enclosed, typically new bills, and are believed to bring good luck.
Each year of the 12-year cycle is represented by a Chinese zodiac animal and characteristics are associated with each zodiac birth year. People born in the Year of the Dog are seen as loyal, honest, amiable, kind, cautious and prudent.
SDCCU is also participating in the following Lunar New Year events: Lunar New Year Tet Festival at SDCCU Stadium on February 9-11, UVSA Lunar New Year Tet Festival in Orange County on February 16-18; VAYA Tet Festival in Mira Mesa on February 16-18; Chinese New Year Fair in downtown San Diego on February 24-25.
