Solana Beach CA— MiraCosta College, in partnership with the City of Solana Beach, McCarthy Building Companies, Inc., Studio E Architects, Boys and Girls Club of San Dieguito, and community members, will celebrate the grand opening and open house of the newly renovated La Colonia de Eden Gardens Multipurpose Classroom on May 24 from 4:00– 6:30 p.m. at 715 Valley Ave., Solana Beach. MiraCosta College’s Continuing Education will utilize the room to offer free non-credit courses including English as a Second Language (ESL), Citizenship, Adult High School (GED) and computer classes.
“From a needs assessment conducted by the National Latino Research Center four years ago, the community of La Colonia de Eden Gardens did not have access to computer and ESL courses. Through the collaboration of a private-public partnership, we are excited to celebrate the opening of this multipurpose classroom,” explains Nikki Schaper, Dean of Behavioral Sciences, History and Adult Education at MiraCosta College. “A heartfelt appreciation to McCarthy Building Companies, who donated all the construction material and labor, Studio E, who graciously drew up the design plans, and MiraCosta College, who provided Chromebooks computers, other technology and furniture.”
In addition to educational opportunities, the La Colonia Community Center offers meeting space for community groups, youth and adult recreational activities and facilities that can be rented for special events, meetings and conferences.
La Colonia de Eden Gardens was founded in the early 1920’s by Mexican American families and is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Solana Beach.
